Promotional Piece With Legion Paper and a Lot of Talent!

We've just recently competed a promotional piece with Legion Paper and fifteen very talented letterpress printers and designers. The project consisted of each printer creating a recipe card in their unique signature style utilizing papers sourced by Legion from around the world. The recipe cards will be distributed at the upcoming National Stationery Show in New York from May 15-18 at the Jacob Javits Center.

Our card was done in collaboration with DeFrance Printing, a very fine 100+ year old company located in San Diego. We chose to transform the Maginating and DeFrance logos into little anthropomorphic characters, wishing all who jot a recipe down on our card to enjoy their meal, or "bon appetit!" We were fortunate enough to use Somerset Velvet Radiant White 330gsm, a very fine paper indeed.

My sister just sent me this photo of our From the Tools card as spotted at The Papery. While we love seeing our cards in every store, what makes this particularly special is that The Papery is in Toronto, Canada - my "...home and native laaand" (pardon my "singing" - that's from the Canadian National Anthem). Anyway, it's a great store - check it out (and many others in Toronto - see our website for a list of them all) if you get a chance!

Well, we sold our Challenge 265 paper cutter... a bit sad that it's gone, but it's a great cutter and we weren't using it - I'd rather it be in use than just sitting around. We're trying to sell our paper cutter - anyone know someone who's looking to buy one? It's a Craftsman 265 - it's in great shape and has a nifty after-market safety catch (that little red thing on the left of the blade) to protect your hands from that 26.5" blade. It has two brand-new blades, in fact, one of them has never been used. We really haven't been using it at all... and if I can sell this cutter, I'll be able to fill that space with another platen press - that would be much more useful!

This is a card we're currently working on... not 100% pleased with it yet... We're trying to convey a relationship that's perfect, like bacon and eggs, and just works so well together... Don't know if it will become a card - sometimes an idea comes together really fast, other times it can take several years. Stay tuned to see what happens!

Here's one of the many rough thumbnails I've had in my sketchbook over the past year for this design... generally I don't scan my drawings into the computer - it takes too much time... so I just take a quick photo and download it, instead. Doesn't look as nice as a scan, but it does the trick.

Birthday Croc

Here's another card we're working on right now... "Birthday Croc." It's based on an idea I've had for awhile now, but was never able to pull together into a design I was pleased with... notice that little bird on the back? He's becoming my "Where's Waldo" - showing up in all sorts of cards... This will be the first time I've combined the colors poppy, pool, and jadite before - should look pretty neat.

I keep a small sketchbook near me a lot of the time - a place to jot down ideas whenever they come to me... most of the time they manifest themselves a little bitty thumbnail sketches... very poorly drawn - just trying to capture the idea as fast as possible. As you can see this is a extremely fast little sketch - but I guess it was all I needed.

Welcome to Maginating's blog - it's a beautiful rainy afternoon here in Studio City and I'm working on some new cards... thought I'd share one with you today. It's called... actually, it doesn't have a name yet. Perhaps I'll call it "Cheery Clouds." Anyway, please keep your eyes peeled as I'll be posting our progress this year and all the growth that happens when you're a young company.
